Travis Blue (Ben Johnson) and his partner Sandy (Harry Carey Jr.) trade horses for a living and want little more than the next sale. Then Elder Wiggs (Ward Bond) hires them to lead his Mormon wagon train across the Utah desert to the San Juan Valley. John Ford sets the two young men beside Denver (Joanne Dru), a traveler who joins the column, and the trail begins to bind them together.
