Waiting for the Barbarians

The Magistrate (Mark Rylance) wants only to see out his years at a remote frontier outpost, keeping the empire at arm's length. That ends when Colonel Joll (Johnny Depp) arrives to question the local people about a coming uprising, his methods cruel enough to turn the Magistrate's stomach. Ciro Guerra adapts J. M. Coetzee's novel, and the cost of standing beside violence you do nothing to stop is that you are part of it.
