John R. Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) grows up on an Arkansas cotton farm with a hard father, Ray (Robert Patrick), and heads for Memphis, where Sam Phillips (Dallas Roberts) signs him to Sun Records. On the road he shares bills with Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, and he meets June Carter (Reese Witherspoon) while his wife waits at home. James Mangold has Phoenix and Witherspoon sing their own songs, so the stage scenes carry the weight of a real performance.
