“Before Rambo... Before Oliver North...”

What sends a small band of American mercenaries into Nicaragua in the middle of the 19th century, and why does their leader believe the country is his to take? William Walker (Ed Harris) arrives with his corps intending to install a new government by coup, and Richard Masur plays Ephraim Squier, one of the men drawn into it. Alex Cox shoots this historical war story as a Weird Western, deadpan and bleached by the sun.
