Waltzes from Vienna

(1934)Directed by Alfred Hitchcock81 minHistory, Romance, Music

Johann Strauss the Younger (Esmond Knight) wants to write music, but his father (Edmund Gwenn), the famous Johann Strauss the Elder, wants him in a bakery with a steady wage. He is pulled between Resi (Jessie Matthews), the baker's daughter he loves, and Countess Helga von Stahl (Fay Compton), a wealthy patron who believes in his talent. Hitchcock, in one of his few operetta films, stages Vienna's waltzes and rivalries with a theatrical, stagebound sweep.
