War and Peace, Part I: Andrei Bolkonsky

Prince Andrei Bolkonsky (Vyacheslav Tikhonov) wants more than the drawing rooms of St. Petersburg can give him, so in 1805 he joins the army as aide-de-camp to General Kutuzov. Back in the capital, his friend Pierre Bezukhov (Sergei Bondarchuk), the illegitimate son of a rich nobleman, is introduced to high society. Sergei Bondarchuk adapts the first part of Tolstoy's novel around one plain question: what a man does with his life when peace and war both want it.
