War and Peace, Part III: The Year 1812

Napoleon's army has crossed into Russia in 1812, and the people who matter to each other are scattered toward a field no one has seen yet. Kutuzov (Boris Zakhava) asks Andrei Bolkonsky (Vyacheslav Tikhonov) to join his staff, but the prince wants a command at the front, while Pierre Bezukhov (Sergei Bondarchuk, who also directed) rides out only to watch. At Borodino, Bondarchuk shows how a war shatters private lives, and how little of that survives the noise.
