War Requiem

(1989)Directed by Derek Jarman90 minWar, Drama

Wilfred Owen (Nathaniel Parker), a British soldier in the trenches of the First World War, is sickened by the cruelty around him and holds onto his love for an army nurse (Tilda Swinton). Derek Jarman builds the film around Benjamin Britten's War Requiem, setting Owen's poems to the music as the war plays out in front of them. An old soldier (Laurence Olivier) sits in a wheelchair, his chest crowded with medals, remembering it all.
