Mona Rudao (Nolay Piho) leads the Seediq people of the Tonbara clan, hunters who live by the rules of the forest and the old law of the rainbow. Wei Te-sheng, working from the 1930 Musha Incident in central Taiwan, sends in the Japanese, who arrive intent on taking the timber and bending the clans to forced labor. Mona stands at the edge of his village, the clan behind him, watching the interlopers come up through the trees.
