Catherine Sloper (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is a shy heiress in 1870s New York, still unmarried and living under the eye of her father, Dr. Austin Sloper (Albert Finney). Then Morris Townsend (Ben Chaplin), younger and without a cent, begins to call on her, and her aunt Lavinia Penniman (Maggie Smith) cheers him on while her father grows suspicious. Agnieszka Holland, adapting Henry James, keeps the camera close to the family's rooms and the quiet they hold.
