Watch on the Rhine

“On her lonesome lips a smile.”

Kurt Müller (Paul Lukas) wants a few quiet days for his family and one thing more, to carry on his work for the anti-Nazi resistance without anyone noticing. He brings his American-born wife Sara (Bette Davis) and their three children to her mother's home near Washington, DC, on the eve of World War II. Herman Shumlin keeps the drama inside that one house, where a visiting Romanian count has begun watching Kurt's luggage.
