An 8-year-old girl named Chuyia (Sarala) is widowed in 1938 and left at an ashram, and no one will explain to her why she cannot simply go home. Deepa Mehta places her among the outcast widows of the house, including the gentle Kalyani (Lisa Ray) and the stern Shakuntala (Seema Biswas), as Gandhi's ideas begin to spread across India. Chuyia's arrival unsettles the women, and what each of them has staked on the ashram's rules begins to show.
