Tom Crick (Jeremy Irons), a high school history teacher in Pittsburgh, needs to understand how his own life came apart. So he stops teaching the textbook and tells his students his story instead, running three generations of his family through the lessons. Stephen Gyllenhaal moves between the teacher at the blackboard and the boy he was, Young Tom (Grant Warnock), whose bond with Young Mary (Lena Headey) he keeps circling back to.
