Professore Paolo Laurana (Gian Maria Volonté), a leftist teacher, sets out to learn the truth about two men shot dead during a hunting party. Elio Petri follows him through a Sicilian community where the mafia, the Church and local politicians would all prefer he stop asking, and where no one answers him plainly. Volonté's Laurana walks the narrow streets in his dark suit, one man among the grainy faces watching him.
