Lt. Col. Hal Moore (Mel Gibson) wants to bring every man he trains back alive, and in 1965 he leads the air cavalry into the Ia Drang Valley, known as the Valley of Death. Randall Wallace follows Moore and his officers, among them Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley (Sam Elliott), through one of the most violent battles of the Vietnam War, while wives like Julie Moore (Madeleine Stowe) wait at home. At its center is Moore's promise that no man is left behind, dead or alive.
