We Were Strangers

China Valdés (Jennifer Jones) joins the Cuban underground in 1933 after Armando Ariete (Pedro Armendáriz), the chief of the secret police, kills her brother. She meets the American expatriate Tony Fenner (John Garfield), who has a plan: dig a tunnel beneath the city cemetery and bring down the whole government at a state funeral. John Huston follows the diggers shovel by shovel, a fight against a regime that can only be won by going underground.
