Etienne Dorsay (Jean Rochefort) finds a photograph in which his wife Marthe (Danièle Delorme) has her arms around a man he can't place, and he can think of nothing else. He dreams up one scheme after another to unmask the stranger, while his friends Daniel (Claude Brasseur), Simon (Guy Bedos) and Bouly (Victor Lanoux) buy a weekend house for next to nothing. Yves Robert keeps the four men talking over each other.
