In a small French town in 1973, Paul Delamare (Claude Piéplu) is the mayor, and Lucienne (Stéphane Audran) is his wife. Pierre Maury (Michel Piccoli) is a local official with a wife of his own, Clotilde (Clotilde Joano), and Claude Chabrol shows how the affair between him and Lucienne takes hold in the town's ordinary routines. Two marriages are already worn out before anyone raises a hand, and the film treats that as the real crime.
