Weekend at Dunkirk

(1964)Directed by Henri Verneuil119 minDrama, War
“Only once before, in The Longest Day, has a motion picture achieved such greatness !”

In June 1940, German troops are closing in from every side while the Allied evacuation of Dunkirk gets under way. Sergeant Julien Maillat (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and his men argue over whether to cross to England or stay and fight. Henri Verneuil, adapting Robert Merle's Prix Goncourt novel, keeps Maillat at the center, a man who has no good answer and cannot stop looking for one.
