Westfront 1918

In the last year of the First World War, four German infantrymen hold a trench in France, going from shelling to attack and back again. The Bavarian (Fritz Kampers) and Karl (Gustav Diessl) snatch an evening in a village behind the lines, and Karl later goes home on leave to find his family worn down by poverty. G.W. Pabst films the trench in mud and smoke, and the men come back to it.
