What Is It Worth?
“A poor in the hand is worth two in the theft”
Two stories run side by side in Sérgio Bianchi's film, one set in the era of slavery and one in Brazil today, and they keep echoing each other without any explanation. Hector (Danton Mello), Clara (Leona Cavalli), Dido (Lázaro Ramos) and the others come out of Machado de Assis's short story "Pai Contra Mãe" and the 18th Century chronicles of Nireu Cavalcanti. Bianchi's question, put plainly, is how much of the old order of owning and selling people has never left.
