In 1932 Hollywood, Mary Evans (Constance Bennett) waits tables at a restaurant until the director Max Carey (Lowell Sherman) wanders in drunk and she makes him laugh. He invites her to his premiere, and after a long night of drinking she gets a screen test and then a studio contract. George Cukor follows her up as Max slides the other way, his career and his drinking pulling at each other, and she has to decide how much of her new life she can hold onto.
