Kevin Caffery (Martin Lawrence) is a professional thief who breaks into the home of the wealthy businessman Max Fairbanks (Danny DeVito), expecting an easy job. Fairbanks catches him, then keeps the ring Kevin's girlfriend gave him. Sam Weisman, adapting a Donald E. Westlake novel, turns that small theft into a feud that has nothing to do with the money.
