When Father Was Away on Business

In 1950s Yugoslavia, still under Stalinist rule, six-year-old Malik (Moreno de Bartoli) cannot work out why his father, Mehmed (Predrag 'Miki' Manojlović), has suddenly gone. His mother, Senija (Mirjana Karanović), has no answers for him, and the family has to get by without the man who ran it. Emir Kusturica tells the whole story from the boy's height, so the grown-ups' secrets reach us as the half-heard things a child collects.
