When Trumpets Fade

“Heroes are born when bullets fly, when earth explodes, when cannons roar...When trumpets fade”

Private David Manning (Ron Eldard) wants out of the war, and after he leaves a dying soldier behind and learns his whole platoon is dead, he asks for a discharge on grounds of mental disability. The request goes nowhere. Captain Pritchett promotes him to sergeant and hands him a new platoon of young inductees, and the Hürtgen Forest is waiting. John Irvin shot this for HBO in 1998 and keeps the frame close on the soldiers' faces.
