In the early 1900s, Lilia Herriton (Helen Mirren), an English widow, travels to Italy and marries the young son of a local dentist. Her family at home, led by the straitlaced Mrs. Herriton (Barbara Jefford) and her son Philip (Rupert Graves), will not accept it. Charles Sturridge adapts E. M. Forster's novel with a restraint that lets the English reserve and the Italian warmth sit side by side.
