Maj. Smith (Richard Burton) is a British officer who gets his orders in wartime and carries them out with a flat, steady calm. This time the job is a captured American general held in the Schloss Adler, a Bavarian castle that is nearly impossible to breach, and Smith takes a small team of Allied soldiers in, including Lt. Morris Schaffer (Clint Eastwood). Brian G. Hutton shoots it as a procedure of climbs, cable cars and ticking minutes.
