Hunter S. Thompson (Bill Murray) is a journalist who files his stories as he lives them, a pace that has turned him into a name in the 1970s. His closest companion is Carl Lazlo (Peter Boyle), a Chicano attorney and activist who drags him into one cause after another. Art Linson keeps the pair on the road together, and each new story Thompson chases puts his paycheck, his freedom and his friendship at risk.
