Billy Colman (Stewart Petersen) is a boy in Cherokee country who works for two years and saves every cent he earns to buy a pair of red-bone coonhound pups. Norman Tokar follows him and the dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann, through the river bottoms, where adventure and tragedy come in turn. Grandpa (James Whitmore) looks on as the boy learns how far trust in a dog can carry someone.
