“Only a woman's heart could reach out for such a man!”

Detective Sergeant Mark Dixon (Dana Andrews) has a temper, and the department knows it. His violent streak keeps him from being the cop his superiors want, and it keeps landing him in front of Lieutenant Thomas (Karl Malden). Morgan Taylor (Gene Tierney) and Tommy Scalise (Gary Merrill) are tangled up in the case he can't leave alone. Otto Preminger directs it in the dark of night streets and rooms, staying close on Andrews's face.
