Bobby "Gator" McKlusky (Burt Reynolds) is a moonshine runner doing time in a Southern prison, a man who knows every back road and every way to be caught on them. He agrees to work with federal agents to break up a moonshine ring, and Ned Beatty plays the local sheriff, J.C. Connors. Joseph Sargent films it in grainy 70s stock, and the pictures that stay are Reynolds behind the wheel of a car and the dust it throws up.
