“In the African heat, one woman stands alone”

Maria Vial (Isabelle Huppert) keeps working her family's coffee plantation as the French peacekeepers pull out and warn the remaining white residents they are on their own. Rebels and soldiers fight for control of a Francophone African country while Maria drives the harvest on, refusing every warning to leave. Claire Denis follows a woman who treats the land as hers by right, even as it stops belonging to anyone who looks like her.
