David Wilson (Tony Curtis), a young chemistry professor, gets caught in a misunderstanding with his wife Ann (Janet Leigh) and invents a story to smooth it over: he is an undercover FBI agent. He pulls in Michael Haney (Dean Martin), a TV writer, to help him keep it going. George Sidney films the two of them in black and white, hurrying through the sub-basements of the Empire State Building, convinced they are on an enemy submarine.
