Ken Harrison (Richard Dreyfuss), a sculptor, wakes in a hospital bed after a car accident, paralyzed from the neck down and able only to talk and turn his head. He wants to die, and he asks the staff to let him. John Badham keeps the camera on his ward, where Dr. Michael Emerson (John Cassavetes) argues for treatment and Dr. Clare Scott (Christine Lahti) listens, until Ken takes his case before Judge Wyler (Kenneth McMillan).
