The letters keep arriving in Littlehampton, and every one of them is stuffed with filthy language. Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley), a loud Irish migrant, is charged with writing them, while the devout Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), one of the recipients, lives under her parents' roof. Thea Sharrock follows the women of the town as they begin to doubt the charge, and Edith keeps her chin up and her curtains drawn.
