In 1936 New York, Van Stanhope (Clark Gable) runs a magazine publishing house, and his secretary Whitey (Jean Harlow) runs Van. His wife Linda (Myrna Loy) has no complaint about the marriage, but others begin to wonder aloud about the hours he keeps with Whitey. Clarence Brown follows Linda as the doubt takes hold, and she has to decide whether to trust the man she married.
