“They were damned good cowboys, until they robbed a bank.”

After a fellow hand is killed in a corral accident, young Frank Post (Ryan O'Neal) tells his friend that there's a quicker way out of wrangling cows: rob the local bank. Ross Bodine (William Holden), older and worried about what becomes of a cowboy too old to ride, goes along reluctantly. Blake Edwards films the R-Bar-R and the open country beyond it in dry, sun-faded light, with the rancher Walt Buckman (Karl Malden) and his sons already on their trail.
