Fourteen-year-old Joe (Ed Oxenbould) wants his family to stay put, and in 1960s Montana that gets harder when his father Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal) loses his job as a golf pro. Jerry signs on to fight a forest fire burning near the Canadian border, leaving Joe and his mother Jeanette (Carey Mulligan) alone. Paul Dano, directing for the first time, keeps the camera on Joe watching his parents come apart from the next room.
