Will Parker (Matthew Modine) skippers an American crew that has just lost the America's Cup in 1983 to an Australian boat. He talks the millionaire Morgan Weld (Cliff Robertson) into paying for an experimental yacht drawn up by Joe Heisler (Stellan Skarsgård), the new man in his ex-girlfriend Kate's (Jennifer Grey) life. Carroll Ballard puts the crew on the water in Australia, where Will stands at the helm and the spray comes off the bow.
