Vivian Bearing (Emma Thompson) has spent her career teaching the dense, difficult Holy Sonnets of John Donne, and she is told she has advanced ovarian cancer. Mike Nichols and Thompson adapted Margaret Edson's Pulitzer-winning play, and Vivian speaks straight to the camera while Dr. Kelekian (Christopher Lloyd) begins an experimental treatment. A woman who has always trusted her intellect has to find out what it is worth once she is a patient.
