Abby McClure (Doris Day), a widow with three sons, and Jake Iverson (Brian Keith), a widower with a teenage daughter, start dating and decide to get married. Howard Morris sets the wedding plans against their kids, who have not asked for a new family and say so, starting with Stacy (Barbara Hershey). Two households are about to become one, and nobody under the age of eighteen has agreed to it.
