Within Our Gates
“Not Merely a Common Moving Picture - A Screen Masterpiece”
Sylvia Landry (Evelyn Preer) is an educated Black woman whose fiancé, Conrad Drebert (James D. Ruffin), has left her, and she carries a past she does not speak about. She commits herself to a school for impoverished Black children that is close to going bankrupt. Oscar Micheaux made it in 1920, in the years of Jim Crow and the Great Migration, and Preer sits with her hands folded, the unspoken weight of that past held in her face.
