Everyone believes the mill heiress Deborah Chandler Clark (Ida Lupino) died in a car accident, and she has let them. She is alive, running from her husband Selden (Stephen McNally), until a returning soldier, Keith Ramsey (Howard Duff), recognizes her. Michael Gordon builds the film around one problem, whether a woman who has learned to trust no one can still decide to trust someone.
