Sam Craig (Spencer Tracy), a sportswriter, picks a public fight in print with Tess Harding (Katharine Hepburn), the international affairs columnist everyone in the newsroom is talking about. They meet, they fall in love, and they marry quickly, though their jobs and their schedules are not built to share one household. George Stevens follows a marriage that has to survive her career, and Sam is not sure it can.
