Woman Walks Ahead

“Defy your times”

In 1890, Catherine Weldon (Jessica Chastain), a portrait painter and widow, leaves New York for the Dakotas to paint the Sioux chief Sitting Bull (Michael Greyeyes). Colonel Silas Groves (Sam Rockwell) and the Army are already pressing the Sioux toward war, and she is a stranger in his territory. Susanna White films the prairie and its people from a patient distance, in the light and open space of the plains.
