“Who gives you the courage to face the world?”

At a mainstream elementary school, fifth grade begins for August Pullman (Jacob Tremblay), a boy with facial differences who has never sat in a classroom before. Stephen Chbosky follows the start of the year through his parents Isabel (Julia Roberts) and Nate (Owen Wilson), his sister Via (Izabela Vidovic), and a classmate, Jack Will (Noah Jupe). Each of them has to decide how to treat a kid they cannot help but look at.
