“Undependable. Unpredictable. Unforgettable.”

Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas), a 50-ish English professor, wants to finish the second novel he has been writing since his award-winning first one seven years ago. Instead his weekend lurches from one misadventure to the next, with a gifted, troubled student named James Leer (Tobey Maguire) along for every one. Curtis Hanson, working from Michael Chabon's novel, lets the mess pile up at an easy, rumpled pace.
