In 1914, the student Demachy (Pierre Blanchar) enlists in the French army, eager to defend his country, and is sent to the trenches in Champagne. Raymond Bernard follows him and his comrades, among them Sulphart (Gabriel Gabrio) and Caporal Breval (Charles Vanel), through a war that grinds on with no end in sight. Behind the lines, the wooden crosses keep going up, row after row.
