The film opens in the years before Broadway, when composer Richard Rodgers (Tom Drake) meets the lyricist Lorenz Hart (Mickey Rooney) and the two start writing songs together. Larry is scattered about life and unhappy in love, while Richard courts Dorothy Feiner (Janet Leigh) and builds a steadier one. Norman Taurog stages their hits as full-scale numbers, set apart from the plain talk of the backstage scenes.
