Xica

“Move over Evita, it’s Xica’s time now!”

In eighteenth-century Brazil, Xica da Silva (Zezé Motta) is a slave in a mining district ruled by Portuguese officials and landowners. She catches the eye of the powerful Comendador João Fernandes (Walmor Chagas), and she uses what she has to climb from the slave quarters into high society. Carlos Diegues, adapting João Felício dos Santos's novel, tells this romanticized version of a real life as a comedy.
